The 2025 YZF-R1 Creates More Questions than Answers

1. Remember earlier this year, when Yamaha announced they would discontinue the R1 in Europe? Well everyone pretty much assumed it would go the same way as the R6, and be left as a “track only” bike or did away with entirely. Then, more rumors starting circulating about a “new” superbike after Yamaha’s General Manager of Design made a statement stressing the importance of a flagship bike, such as the R1, remaining in their line up. Then the 2025 R1 was announced. And… it’s the same 10 year old bike with winglets and new brakes. It is “track only” in Europe due to Euro 5 Emissions regulations, but still sold for street use in North America. The R1 used to be an industry front runner, now it seems like a bit of an antiquated place holder… Is it meant to just rest in the top of Yamaha’s sport bike line up until the R9 is finally announced?

2. But it doesn’t stop there! Yamaha Team boss Lin Jarvis also confirmed that they are working on a V4 engine to compete in MotoGP, as the Yamaha is the only inline 4 still on the grid. Is the V4 development another reason they haven’t done much of anything to the R1 in the last 5-10 years? Would a V4 powered superbike ultimately make its way into Yamaha’s street bikes, the way their other GP innovations have? All this news still leaves more questions than answers.

3. Alright, enough superbike talk. I know why you’re really here. You want some MINIBIKE news! Mini bikes are the final frontier to complete any experienced rider’s repertoire. There is nothing like low stakes, low speed fun to really enrich your experience on two wheels. And if Honda didn’t already have enough MiniMOTOs in their line up, the Dax will find its way back into Honda dealerships for 2025. In the 70s, the Honda Trail CT70 was known as the Dax in Europe, and it represented a chunky, beefier version of the esteemed Trail model. Over 725,000 thousand Honda Trails have been sold in the US over the years, because it is hard not to love a small little off-road trail bike. The Trail 125 came back to Honda’s lineup in 2021, and now for 2025, the Dax will be sold alongside it. It uses the same 124 cc single from the existing MiniMOTO models, with a beefier T-bone frame and chunky tires. I already put a deposit down and am mapping out my cross-country minibike enduro tour.

4. I’m a bit of a watch guy. I have my own collection of time pieces that hold some degree of significance. Plus a few work horse Timex’s for when you just need to get the job done with no fuss. I also love motorcycles with 6 cylinder engines. There is nothing like the insane top end scream of a 6 cylinder. What do watches and 6 cylinder motorcycles have to do with one another? Well Honda teamed up with Swiss watchmaker Baresi & Caine to create a watch commemorating the 60 year anniversary of their RC164 “Honda Six” race bike. This timepiece is limited to 60 units and is for sale for a cool £28,000. If anyone affiliated with the development of this watch is reading this, I’d be happy to wear one on camera for you.
