There is Hope! A New YZF-R1 in the Works!
CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SQUID 🦑 📰 🏍
“…it is the flagship, it's the symbolic motorcycle. Even if you didn't sell a single motorcycle, it still has meaning by existing.” |

cursed AI depiction of next gen R1 for demonstration purposes only
A few months back, Yamaha announced they were nixing the YZF-R1 in their line up as it didn’t meet increasing strict emissions regulations. As superbike sales wane and middleweight twins and triples have become the brand’s most successful offerings, it seemed as if Team Blue was reluctant to invest the development costs needed to keep the R1 alive. The 4 cylinder R6 got the axe in favor of the twin-cylinder R7, so most assumed the R1 would get the same treatment. But according to the General Manager of Product Design, Hirotoshi Noguchi, development for Yamaha’s next generation flagship superbike is already underway. Between this and the long rumored R9, Yamaha simps are getting some serious Team Yamaha Blue Balls.
Learning to ride a motorcycle can be hard. Usually after getting their endorsement, new riders will spend some time in a parking lot or quiet neighborhood roads while they gradually get their bearings. But that’s not the case for 17 year old Proto-Chad Luke Blackley who did a 4,000 mile ride along the Trans European Trail just weeks after getting his A1 license. I guess that is a testament to the European licensing and education system, huh? American riders after passing the MSF: “OMG i just road a mile to McDonald’s on my liter bike i almost DIED bruh ngl no cap it was bussin’.” European riders getting their A1 license: “I just did 4,000 miles on a 125 cc and it was pretty fun.”
I’m truthfully getting pretty tired of talking about Harley-Davidson, but it seems the Motor Co can just not stay out of the news lately. DEI policies, overseas production, screwing their dealers, LiveWire recalls, Sturgis, blah blah blah. Yeah, we’ve heard it. But to just add more fuel to the air-cooled dumpster fire, HD also just lost a $287M lawsuit relating to the traction control system failure on a Trike model. Essentially, this poor trike owner was riding down the road, when traction control came on on ONE rear wheel, causing the machine to swerve off the road. The rider and passenger were seriously injured and the bike needed 25,000 dollars in repairs. Later, a recall notice was issued for the same failure. He had his trike repaired again and asked to be compensated for his medical bills for the first crash. HD denied the reimbursement. Then his trike’s traction control system failed AGAIN, causing brakes to be applied to one rear wheel, this time resulting in an even worse crash where his passenger was killed. Yeah, this went to court and the judge ruled in the rider’s favor. It sounds like Harley’s trikes are now deadlier than those old Honda three wheelers that got outlawed in the 80s.
Models sporting Honda’s new E-Clutch system have hit the US market. Although the question still stands: is this a worthwhile addition to the modern motorcycle or is it needless innovation just for innovations sake? Honda already has a selection of fully automatic DTC motorcycles, a technology that brands like BMW and Yamaha are investing in as well. And this E-clutch system essentially mimics the Rekluse clutch found on MV Agusta’s SCS models. You would assume this system is designed to help beginner riders who haven’t mastered clutch control, but this likely expensive new tech is not found in any true beginner bikes, only the 650 models. So for now, it lands in the “meh” category for me. Honda is willing to invest buckoo bucks into new developments just to earn the patronage of a select handful of new riders. Then it seems like every existing Honda rider ends up eating the cost as the need to recoup these investments leads to higher prices across the board via the “Honda Tax”.
